The overall research paper is a detailed analysis of a specific short literary work (poem, short story or novel excerpt) which we have already read, including a discussion of how the author’s life relates to the work (for example, Bradstreet may have been so open and honest in her poems because she never expected anyone to read them), special features or devices used in the work (symbolism, setting, characters) and the primary theme or “meaning” of the work.
Selection of Work
You may choose any work on the syllabus that we have already read. You must choose something we already read, since we have already covered these in class and hopefully you will both like and understand at least one.
Research Paper Section #1
The first section tries to outline how the author’s life relates to the story you are studying. It is not enough to simply write a biography of the author. You need to talk about aspects of the author’s life that have some bearing on the story. This section of your paper should not be “Edward Taylor” but rather “How Edward Taylor’s Work as a Minister influenced ‘Meditation 8, First Series.’” Are there similarities between the author’s life and a main character? Is the setting some place the author lived? Is the theme of the work something that the author was obsessed with?
Research Paper Section #2
The second section chooses two or three devices used in the work and discusses how they contribute to the work’s meaning, quality, etc. For instance, in Hawthorne’s Young Goodman Brown, the names of all the characters are significant. They indicate the role the characters will play in the story. In Cooper’s Deerslayer the realistic setting makes the reader more willing to believe the fantastic plot. The goal of the section is to discuss the function of devices in the work.
You can choose several different devices, or several different examples of the same device (i.e.—symbolism, setting, and irony or three symbols, three examples of irony, etc.).
The paper’s final section deals with theme. The goal of this last section is to discuss what the work really means: its interpretation and/or its significance. The author wrote the story for some reason. What message were they trying to communicate to the world? If there are several possible themes, discuss each one if you would like, or just pick the one you like best.
Remember that the paper needs an introduction to establish your topic and a conclusion to sum up your findings. You will need 2 or 3 body paragraphs for each section of the paper. The section on theme is normally longer than the other sections.
First, you must declare a topic. Go to the appropriate place in Discussions and post your topic. You must identify the title and author of the literary work, and explain why you want to write about it. Example:
I am writing about William Cullen Bryant’s “To a Waterfowl.” I’ve always been interested in the idea of fate versus free will, and in this poem Bryant seems convinced he has a destiny.
Don’t just fly off the handle and pick something. Take this week to re-read some of the works, and pick one that you are really interested in, because you will be working on it for the next six weeks.
