While I don’t object to the use of headings in an essay you should use them sparingly and your sections should “flow” into one another naturally. Do not use headings in lieu of ensuring that your essay reads like an essay. Marks will be deducted for the overuse/overreliance of headings. 2. Be very careful about using personal pronouns. Use it sparingly and only to tell the reader what you’re going to do/have done. Avoid “we” and making generalized claims that assume you and your reader have the same perspective. 3. While personal reflection is an important and useful genre of writing, this is an academic research paper not your personal blog. Language should be formal, clear and coherent, avoid jargon and clichés. 4. Make sure you are substantiating your claims with evidence and scholarship! Just stating something without supporting it weakens your argument. 2 2
