Modernism was promoted by department stores, museums, and publications that chose to sponsor exhibitions and design competitions. It is through this support that Modernism became almost institutionalized, so that the term "modern" began to mean something that is up-to-date, new, technologically advanced and, perhaps most importantly, of good design.
