What Do They Mean
Interpreting messages is something that we do continually. Sometimes, we do this well. Other times we do not, and these occasions can be problematic. The question for scholars is: How do people know when they are interpreting the meaning presented correctly? This activity will require you to interpret messages.
To begin this activity, you will need to find a persuasive political speech from the website, American Rhetoric. Be sure to budget enough time so that you may watch the speech you chose twice. You will also need to be able to critique the speaker and present counterpoints, so it is recommended that you take notes while you watch the speech.
To complete this dialogue, please follow these steps:
1. Find a persuasive speech from American Rhetoric
a. Select a speech that is visually recorded
b. Do not use a speech that does not have a recording, as it is best to listen to and view the presentation first.
2. View the speech very carefully and answer the questions:
a. What makes this speech persuasive or not? Be sure to speak to ideas discussed in the Module: appeals to ethos, pathos and logos.
b. How does the speaker make you react or feel when watching?
3. Now, read the speech and in a post of 275-300 words answer the questions:
a. What is main premise of the speech?
b. How could you argue against this speech?
4. Write down your answers to the questions.
5. Post on the discussion board a link to your speech and the answers to your questions.
For this exercise, there may be sensitive speech topics chosen. That is fine. However, you need to exercise professionalism when making your first post and when responding to your peers.
