Ways filmmakers portray cultures other than their own

Discuss the way filmmakers portray cultures other than their own, particularly if there's a history of conflict influencing that perception. However, as you've seen in this week's PowerPoint, those perceptions can change. Think about the change in the portrayal of Gojira in Japanese cinema, from a symbol of American nuclear power to a monster who sometimes is the good guy. Likewise, think about the difference in the way the Japanese have been portrayed in Chinese and Hong Kong martial arts films over the years.

What inspires these changes in perceptions, and what do you think a filmmaker needs to do to facilitate that change? How do you get an audience to accept that culture or power once seen as adversarial is not anymore? Do you think it's getting easier or harder for that kind of change to happen, and why?
