Video Analysis

Overview: You will watch a portion of a recording of the Oct. 12, 2020 Malibu City Council meeting and complete both scripts (show and editing) for a one-minute and 30 second package that could appear in a television or online visual newscast.

  1. Using your news judgment, pick one issue you think is the most newsworthy (impact, interest, etc.) to research and report. You should research more background and contextual information on your topic. WRITE YOUR STORY AS IF IT WAS -- THE DAY AFTER THE MEETING!
  2. Using actual sound bites from the meeting, write a short package about the city issue and council decision. You are going to need to really boil the information down to only the most important facts. Remember to make the information easy to understand by writing conversationally. You will make up the b-roll and natural sound you would need to visually support your editing script.
  3. You will submit TWO separate scripts on Google Classroom under the assignment: 1) Editing script - this script should be a full-page Google doc and include all the directions for your "editor" including video possibilities and SOTS that are fully written out. 2) Show script - this script should include an anchor lead and on-camera tag as well as the proper left-side director commands (e.g., "take package" and computer graphic (cg/super) times) (use the attached template for this script).

Package Details:
-Your final package (with SOTs and nats (hypothetical) included) should be about one minute and thirty seconds. You'll have to read your reporter track/narration out loud and time it.
-On the editing script, all packages must include actual sound bites said during the meeting as well as hypothetical b-roll and natural sound possibilities that would be needed to actually edit and tell the story.

Grading: (see attached rubric)
-Your story will be graded on elements including: 1) broadcast writing style, 2) story accuracy and balance, 3) sound bite selection, 4) tie writing skill, 5) script formatting, 6) story length, 7) written anchor lead and on camera tag, 8) and b-roll and natural sound suggestions.
