Varieties of transgender experience

Read the following three classic essays from the first great wave of transgender theorizing of the 1990s. Each
expresses a different person's experience of being transgender. Submit brief answers to the three essays, as
indicated below.

  1. What Does It Cost to Tell the Truth? by Riki Anne Wilchins

  2. Manliness by Patrick Califa
    In what ways does Califa consider himself a man? and in what ways, not? Describe some ways In which you
    consider yourself a man, a woman, another gender altogether, or no gender at all.
  3. My Words to Victor Frankenstein by Susan Stryker
    Does Susan Stryker consider herself a monster? Why, or why not? State a time when you considered yourself
    a monster (or did something that you now consider monstrous).
