Include either a link, or a screenshot of the visualisation along with your news story. Your story must be suitable for publication in either a local or national UK newspaper. Name the publication you are targeting in your assignment submission. Also please include a 200-300 word explainer, telling me how you found the data set, what you did to investigate a news story out of it, and how you visualised it. This need only be bullet points.

It is very important to follow the exact instructions stated above. As you can see it’s not just an essay but a news story (data story build on a data set) + visualisation + 200-300 word explainer.

The title of news story shouldn’t be a question. It should answer the 5ws (Who, What, When, Where and Why). This work shouldn’t be styled as an essay. It should be a news story. Just like any story from Guardian or BBC News. Please keep this in mind. Also when you’re done with it, you should state in the explainer which news outlet it is meant for. For instance if you think this story fits in Guardian, you should state that (if you could explain why could be great, but at least name the publication).

Please make at least 4-5 visualisations using Data Wrapper, Infogr.am or Carto.db. And please create different ones, not just bar charts.

Also try not to go over the word limit (500) for the news story.

The story needs to be based on raw data. For instance xls tables with just numbers in them. Statistical reports.

The main thing is that the data you base the story on must be raw. I suppose it’s possible to use ready numbers here and there but the work will be graded on the basis of the ability to work with raw data developing a story out of it.

It could be a big data set that consists of some sort of statistics. Police reports, government reports or any other official reports. An excel data file made by government, police or some organisation that can be used to make a news story out of.

It may be rather messy and huge data set but the task is to clean it and interrogate it. It doesn’t have to be 1 file. It could be few different data sets. But it is important to show the ability to work with these big data sets and to build a news story out of it.
