Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)/Therapy Presentation
Purpose:
Students will demonstrate the teaching-learning process and the use of technology through a presentation to their classmates on a CAM therapy.
Students will present individually and will develop a presentation over several weeks using class activities to provide resources to support content. The student will select a CAM therapy topic for presentation.
Once the topic is approved by course faculty, the student will research information on the selected CAM therapy including: description of the therapy, historical development of the therapy, indications for usage contraindications and adverse effects, identify how a culture other than their own might use this CAM therapy as a preventative strategy and include any health teaching for patients using this CAM therapy.
Objectives:
At the end of the assignment, the student will:
- Identify a CAM therapy.
- Describe the history, uses and implications of a CAM therapy.
- Utilize credible electronic resources to provide information related
to CAM therapy. - Explore culture, prevention, and CAM therapies.
- Refine communication skills with peers and faculty.
Instructions: - Research CAM-accessing reputable resources (.edu, .gov, .org) to gather information for your CAM presentation

- Identify indications for usage of the CAM therapy.
- Discuss contraindications, side effects and adverse effects of CAM Therapy.
- Identify a culture (other than your own) that might use this CAM therapy as a treatment or preventive strategy.
- Describe health teaching required for patients selecting this CAM therapy.
- Describe at least one nursing research study that has been completed that has explored your CAM (articles may be older than 5 years if necessary)
- Do an internet search for a clinic or practitioner who practices with the CAM therapy that you selected and include a slide with information about where the practitioner is located along with the website information.
- Include a summary and conclusion.
- The presentation length should be 5- 10 minutes.
a. The formal presentation will be a Google slide presentation with an audio component saved as a YouTube video and posted on Blackboard (please note: this is as if you are speaking in class). Instructions for preparing a Google slide presentation, recording audio and saving it on Google Drive are available in
Blackboard. The presentation will be posted as a link to the file saved on Google Drive

a. Discuss how your CAM therapy is similar to the one presented by two different peers.
b. Identify a scenario where you think your peer’s CAM therapy might be helpful to
a patient.
c. Discuss how you could present that CAM therapy to a group of nurses.
