Unmanned Sensing Systems Project

This course includes an opportunity for you to identify
a relevant Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)

based
remote sensing application of interest and
develop
a
project presenting your solution. You will also have
the opportuni
ty to receive feedback on your project and offer constructive inputs to your classmates for
their efforts.
Broadly, you
will
address
the following factors
through
the development of
your project
:
1.
Identify
a relevant application of UAS

based remote sensin
g
2.
Identify
an appropriate sensor(s) that will satisfy the requirements of the identified application
3.
Pair the selected sensor(s) with an appropriate UAS to accomplish the outlined application
4.
Develop
a complete solution addressing
your application and
the
project requirements
5.
Justify
the selections made
in the project
through submission of the project document and
presentation
for peer

review and comment
This sensor application
project includes several graded components
and is developed over
the course of
eight
modules
.
During this period,
you
will engage in discussions w
ith peers on the merits of your
selections, receive feedback from
the instructor related to your
gene
ral approach, and finalize your
project
document and supporting presentation
.
The projec
t docum
ent should be an
APA
formatted
paper
and
include a justification of your
selections and
critical
exploration of
the logic
supporting your selection
throughout the process.
The expected length of the unmanned systems project document is
12

15 pages
of content excluding
cover materials (i.e. cover page, abstract, table of contents) and references.

Activity Overview and Step

Step Processes:
You
will
develop the required mat
erials for project addressed through
UAS

based sensor systems
satisfying a
n applicat
ion of your own choosing
.
You are free
to explore
uses and technologies that you
deem most appropriate within the bounds
of your selected
application
.
During the
development of your
project
,
you may
initially take a technical approach and
assume no regulat
ory restrictions for your
proposed application or solution
.
However, you should address any
current
regulatory guidance or
restrictions that could limit or prohibit your application as proposed
in the limitations section of your paper
.
You
must develop a
ll
of the requisite information, including
justification and explanatory
inputs, as might
be required for
management review prior to
approval to pursue the project in a business or government
organization
.
Potential applications for the project development
include:
?
Geospatial (utilities, mapping, construction, etc.)
?
First responder (police response, traffic monitoring, firefighting, medical emergencies, disaster
response, etc.)
?
Precision agriculture (crop emergence, crop health, harvest readiness, livestoc
k/wildlife
monitoring, etc.)
?
Inspections (amusement ride, tower, and utility inspections, etc.)
?
Sport/Entertainment (aerial videography, etc.)
?
Other applications of interest pursued with instructor approval
The development takes place interspersed
over
ei

modules
with each activity building upon the prior
deliverables.

Module 1
o
In Module 1, there are no project deliverables. However, you should thoroughly review
the project expectations and confirm any unclear areas with the instructor. It is imperativ
e
that quality and complete project components are submitted following the prescribed
module schedule, both to ensure successful completion of your project and timely peer
feedback with your classmates.

Project Overview
?
During the course, you will
develop a solution for a remote sensing application
leveraging UAS. In this module, you will review the directions, expectations,
rubric, and schedule to familiarize yourself with the project.
?
The general project schedule follows:
?
Module 1: Project expec
tations review
?
Module 2: Mission application selection
?
Module 3: Sensor selection
?
Module 4: Platform and sensor pairing
?
Module 5: Preliminary project document submission and peer review
?
Module 6: Project document update and draft presentation development
?
M
odule 7: Final project document submission and presentation update
?
Module 8: Final project presentation submission and peer review
?
Module 2
o
In Module 2, you must select a civil or commercial application of interest that requires or
leverages UAS

based rem
ote sensing.
Several examples of potential project application
areas of focus include g
eospatial (utilities, mapping, construction, etc.), first responder
(police response, traffic monitoring, firefighting, medical emergencies, disaster response,
etc.), pr
ecision agriculture (crop emergence, crop health, harvest readiness,
livestock/wildlife monitoring, etc.), inspections (amusement ride, tower, and utility
inspections, etc.), and sport/entertainment (aerial videography, etc.). Other applications
of interes
t may be pursued with instructor approval. The key in this module is the early
identification of a UAS remote sensing application upon which your course project will be
built. Your application proposal should be professionally written as if it was to be
