Unethical conduct
Unethical conduct is not necessarily illegal conduct, and the difference between ethical and unethical conduct can be difficult to spot. Using the Internet, identify an example within the last year of a company engaging in legal but arguably unethical conduct. Determine two reasons why this conduct could be deemed unethical and why you believe the company failed to make the right decision.
When it comes to legal conduct, where are laws found and what is the purpose of law? Which do you most agree with? If running a business, where should a business executive look to find and understand the law that governs their business?

Meta’s Algorithmic Amplification of Divisive Content: A Case of Legal Yet Unethical Conduct?
In 2023, Meta (formerly Facebook) faced widespread criticism for its algorithmic amplification of divisive and harmful content, despite it remaining legal within the current regulatory framework. Here’s why this conduct could be deemed unethical and why I believe they made the wrong call:
Unethical Reasons:
- Prioritizing engagement over safety: Meta’s algorithms are designed to maximize user engagement, often through emotionally charged content that sparks anger, fear, and outrage. This prioritizes clicks and ad revenue over the well-being of users and society, potentially exacerbating polarization and real-world harm.
- Exploiting human vulnerabilities: Meta’s algorithms exploit our confirmation bias and tendency towards negativity. By feeding us content that reinforces our existing beliefs and anxieties, they create echo chambers that hinder critical thinking, empathy, and constructive dialogue.
