Understanding sociolinguistic choices

Order Description Choose a brief dialogue scene from a novel, play script, television show, movie or panel discussion in English and analyse the dialogue for how the social situation and language relate to each other. identify how the contextual conditions shape what language is used and how social identities and relations including class, gender and age are performed through language choices. It is important to transcribe the dialogue and then use the range of sociolinguistic concepts that we have discussed in LCN612 to explain what is said and why, that is, what meanings are operating in the particular context and how are they realised in language. Include why understanding of these sociolinguistic concepts is beneficial to professional practice.
