U.S. consumers have become increasingly aware of the impact of carbon emissions and other “greenhouse gases” on climate change. One result of this concern is an increase in the production and sale of automobiles that are powered by electricity rather than gasoline. The article mentioned that Toyota “plans to introduce a new Highlander SUV…and another SUV model next year.” Gasoline-powered SUVs generate more carbon emissions than electric cars. Why would Toyota plan to market new SUVs rather than other models that are considered to be more “environmentally friendly”? Should the federal government force automobile dealers to produce fewer SUVs and trucks and more electric-powered models?
