This chapter will be the introduction part for my dissertation.
This aim of this dissertation is to delve into the extent to which social network sites have become a conduit for criminal activity. The dissertation will look into
the most reported cases to the police and analyze the statistics on crime most related to social media which may include revenge porn, cyber bullying, fraud,
harassment. This study will serve to determine whether social media users are well aware of the risks they might put themselves in when using or giving their consent
to online activities. The dissertation will analyze what could be done in order to enhance the available security and privacy options that these social network sites
provide. Furthermore, this study will look into issues such as how social media is affecting our criminal justice system and whether social media is changing the way
law enforcement tackles investigations and if social media helps in solving crimes.
This research will delve into the nature of the crime mostly reported to the police such as harassment and revenge porn and whether any instance resulted in
convictions. Furthermore, this research will outline whether there are laws applicable in Malta and in England for any type of criminal activities on social media.
research will also determine which are the most common crimes on social media and any repercussions that might be caused from these types of crimes.
