Thinking ethically: design

Thinking ethically about sustainability

Eco-friendly design principles or the ethics of sustainability in document design is rarely covered in traditional textbooks, but sustainability is a value across many professional contexts, so it's at least considering having an eco-friendly mindset when you design. Furthermore, sustainable practices often give companies social capital for seeming to value the collective community over self. Even if money or social capital aren't primary values, money almost always is, and they often go hand-in-hand. Take for instance, the Pennsylvania teen who made headlines when he calculated that the government could save millions just by changing its standard font; the savings, of course, would be in energy and paper that a narrower font would save. Some professional designers debunked the teen's novice research, but it generated a national debate and got people thinking about ways to save the government, companies, and individuals money while also helping the planet. Going paperless saves companies money, but that doesn't totally erase the environmental impact since digital data requires energy. Sustainability in workplace communication design is a complex topic, and one that we won't attempt to solve here today, but I want to nudge you toward at least thinking about what you could do to think ethically about your role in what should be our common goal: keeping the planet healthy.
