For your selected city, briefly answer the following questions in each subject area

:-Urbanizationo Briefly describe the city’s founding and early growth. What was the relationship between capitalism and the city’s birth? (i.e. did the city grow around a new industry or marketable resource? Did it serve as a trading post gathering merchants, or concentrate workers from rural areas or other regions?)

-Geographic levels of influenceo Describe some change in the history of the city that we can attribute to localfactors. This change can be an economic, political, or cultural development, and the “factors” might be things like local city politics, class or ethnic conflict within the city, or the city’s distinctive local culture. Then, in a similar way describe a second change that we can attribute to global factors. o For each case, be sure to explain why you think that local or global factors are the main driver

.-Meaningo City space is shaped and used according to the meanings attached to that particular space. Describe one way the city was shaped by culture (i.e. religion, 2community values, or the unique cultural practices of an ethnic group). Then, describe one way that the city was shaped by more instrumental or “rational” concerns. o For each case, be sure to explain how you can tell whether it is culture or instrumentality that is the main driver

.-Political economy Describe some aspect of the city (or some change that occurred in its history) that a political economist like Engels might analyze. This can involve changes in the industries, economic situation, inequality, types of employment, uneven development, or class conflict in the city.

-Urbanismo Like Simmel, describe one way the city allows its citizens to engage in distinctively “urbanist” activities and lifestyles. How does this encourage or allow residents of the city to “cultivate themselves” as individuals? What are the possible positive or negative results of this urbanism, if compared to the way an individual might live in a non-urbanized community?
