To understand how we grow and learn, psychologists often look at the work of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky. While both studied cognitive development, they focused on very different forces as the primary "engine" of growth.
Piaget viewed children as "little scientists" who actively explore their world to build knowledge.
Major Point 1: Stages of Development. Piaget proposed that all children pass through four distinct, universal stages (Sensorimotor, Preoperational, Concrete Operational, and Formal Operational). In each stage, the quality of a child's thinking fundamentally changes as they mature biologically.
