The role of social worker in end of life decisions

The role of social worker in end of life decisions

Order Description

Research project : The role of social worker in end of life decisions
Target population : social workers from London , Lewisham Borough

Learning outcome 1 : Understand how to formulate a research specification

1.1 Formulate and record possible research project outline specifications
1.2 Identify the factors that contribute to the process of research project selection
1.3 Undertake a critical review of key references
1.4 Produce a research project specification
1.5 Provide an appropriate plan and procedures for the agreed research specification

Task 1 A: Based upon the specific health and social care problem identified in your
chosen organisation formulate a Research Proposal, outlining the specific objectives that need to be addressed in the Research Proposal form .

Note: Here you need to identify the research questions to arrive at the appropriate
Research Objectives and support your arguments (factors that contribute to the
process of research project selection) and justify the hypotheses, if any.

Task 1 B: Identify Relevant Literature related to your chosen topic and undertake a
critical review of key references, including appropriate theories and concepts.
Note: You should cite and reference all supporting arguments with sources using
Harvard System of Referencing.

Task 1 C: Develop and discuss the relevant Research Methodology to implement
the proposed research and draw up an appropriate plan, including a time schedule
for carrying out the research (GANNT Chart can be used if necessary).
Note: You need to consider the relevant sources of data and such as primary and
secondary and outline and justify the proposed methods using appropriate sampling methods to collect data within the context of validity and reliability.

Learning outcome 2: Be able to implement the research project within agreed procedures and to specification

2.1 Match resources efficiently to the research question or hypothesis
2.2 Undertake the proposed research investigation in accordance with the agreed specification and procedures
2.3 Record and collate relevant data where appropriate

Task 2 A: Plan and organise the necessary resources and match efficiently to the
research question or hypothesis so that the proposed research investigation can be
undertaken in accordance with the agreed specification and procedures.
Note: This requires you to demonstrate evidence in the form of logbook, a sound
questionnaire, schedule, and monitoring process used etc.

Task 2 B: Record and collate relevant data where appropriate and organise in tables if necessary.
Note: Here, you should also provide the raw data collected and an account on the
response rate and the overall effectiveness of the research investigation process.

Learning outcome 3: Be able to evaluate the research outcomes

3.1 Use appropriate research evaluation techniques
3.2 Interpret and analyse the results in terms of the original research specification
3.3 Make recommendations and justify areas for further consideration

Task 3 A: Organise structure the raw data in tabular format and use appropriate
techniques to analyse the findings in an orderly manner.
Note: You would need to use appropriate methods to present the finding such as
graphs and charts as well and produce a produce a body of written materials.

Task 3 B: Interpret and evaluate the results in terms of the original research
Specification and objectives and make recommendations with justification.
Hint: The findings should be linked to the research objectives in the process of
evaluation so that conclusion can be made whether the research problems identified
or the proposed hypotheses were true or not.

Working title of your proposed research     “ The role of social worker in palliative and end of life decisions “

Research project description

Palliative care is an approach that improves quality of life for patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-limiting illness. This is

accomplished through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and comprehensive assessment and treatment of pain and other physical,

psychosocial, and spiritual problems.

Palliative and end of life issues are often delicate and controversial and require skilled, insightful interdisciplinary care.

All social workers, regardless of practice settings, will inevitably work with service users facing long-term situations involving life-limiting illness, dying, death,

grief, and bereavement. Using their expertise in working with individuals from varying cultures, ages, socioeconomic status, and non-traditional families, social

workers help families across the life span in coping with trauma, suicide, and death, and must be prepared to assess such needs and intervene appropriately.

Social work practice settings addressing palliative and end of life care may include hospitals, hospices, home care, nursing homes, etc. Therefore, social work is a

broadly based profession that can meet the needs of individuals and families affected by life-limiting illness and end of life issues.

The need for social workers trained and skilled in working with palliative and end of life care situations has increased, because of advancements in medical

technology, rising rates of chronic illness, increasing number of elderly people, and longer life spans.

Aims

To critically analyse the role of social worker in palliative and end of life care .

Objectives

1.    Identify skills valuable to develop as social worker in order to help service users and their families to make end of life decisions.
2.    Identity barriers social worker encounter when discussing end of life decisions with service users and their families.
3.    Identify common end of life decisions social worker help services users and their families make.

Information required / literature review
My literature review was carried out at the start of a research project to find out what is already known about the role of social worker in palliative and end of life

decisions. The review involved reading about the role of social worker in end of life decisions to obtain knowledge and understanding relating to the context of the

research. The literature review also helped me to narrow down the research topic and identify the specific that will be the focuses of research project such us skills

valuable for a social worker, barriers when discussing end of life decisions and common end of life decisions taken by social worker.
