Writing the Literature Review for your Research Proposal\Paper
Important guidelines and Instructions for consideration in writing the Literature Review in the Social Work
Research Proposal\ Paper.
What is a literature review? A literature review is a way of organizing, summarizing, and critiquing a topic to
inform the reader about a problem or issue. You can discuss what others have said or reported--- what is new,
important, or useful; however it is important to provide a balance of various points of view by assessing
strengths and limitations of the literature. And look for “news” as you integrate all the studies into a
comprehensive picture of your topic. What is new or different from what other authors or researchers have
reported. Identify and comment on the major themes found in the literature and offer a critique of the works.
You need to communicate that you have read and understand the relevant research sufficiently to integrate,
replicate, and expand on what is known on a specific topic. You should not summarize exhaustively every
article you read. You should provide a paragraph or two on some studies and perhaps only a sentence or two
