The owner of a small electronics firm based in the American Midwest

Assume you are the owner of a small electronics firm based in the American Midwest. Your research department has developed a cellular phone that translates conversations into any of 24 languages. From conversations with business associates and friends, you have identified two especially attractive overseas markets—Brazil and Australia. Use the CIA World Factbook to help you research these two countries.

1. What is the total population for each country? Which country’s population is growing the fastest? What is the median age?

2. Compare the government types for each country. What type of legal system does each have?

3. Which country has the largest number of cellular phones in use? What percentage of the population uses cellular phones?

4. Based on your research, which country, Brazil or Australia, would you choose to introduce your product? Why?

Greenwich Industries entered the Latin American market in the 1950s by forming a joint venture with Industro Viejes in Santo Ignezeto to manufacture bicycle parts. The joint venture flourished in the 1960s, and Greenwich eventually bought out 100% ownership. The company earned steady profits from the Latin American subsidiary until a military junta overthrew the government in the late 1970s. The ruling generals expropriated all foreign-owned companies, including the Santo Ignezeto bicycle parts plant.

Today Santo Ignezeto is ruled by a democratic government that has been in power for 10 years. Industro Viejes has approached Greenwich about another joint venture. The government is offering an attractive incentive package to attract foreign investment.

You have been assigned to travel to Santo Ignezeto and begin planning and staffing.

1. What are the potential problems that face the new venture?

2. What are the potential advantages of this venture for the company?

3. Would you recommend entering the joint venture? Why or why not?

4. If Greenwich Industries partners with Industro Viejes, would you recommend hiring local managers or American managers for the top and middle management positions? Why?

Cellular Phone Market Research

Based on research from the CIA World Factbook and other sources:

Population & Demographics:

Brazil: Total population is approximately 216 million, with a median age of around 33. The population is growing at a rate of roughly 0.61%.

Australia: Total population is approximately 26.5 million, with a median age of around 38. The population is growing at a rate of roughly 0.77%.

Fastest Growing Population: Australia's population is currently growing slightly faster than Brazil's.

Government & Legal Systems:

Brazil: Its government is a federal presidential republic. It has a civil law legal system, which is based on a comprehensive system of codified statutes and regulations, in contrast to the case law-based system used in common law countries.

Australia: Its government is a parliamentary democracy under a federal constitutional monarchy. It operates a common law legal system based on English common law, where judicial precedent and statutory laws are the primary sources of law.

  1.

Brazil: As of 2023 data, there were over 260 million cellular phones in use, making the penetration rate over 120%. This indicates that many individuals have more than one device.

Australia: With over 30 million cellular phone subscriptions, the penetration rate is over 113%.

Largest Number: Brazil has a significantly larger number of cellular phones in use, reflecting its much larger total population.

Market Choice: Based on this research, Brazil would be the preferred country to introduce your new product. While Australia has a slightly faster population growth rate and a more familiar common law legal system, Brazil offers a vastly larger market. The existing high cellular phone penetration rate in Brazil demonstrates a strong and established consumer base that is receptive to new mobile technologies. Its younger median age of 33 also suggests a population more likely to be early adopters of innovative technology like a real-time language translation phone. The sheer scale of the Brazilian market presents a far greater opportunity for a new product, despite the complexities of its civil law system.

Greenwich Industries Case Study

Potential Problems: The primary and most significant problem is political risk, specifically the threat of expropriation or nationalization. Despite the current democratic government, the historical precedent of seizing foreign-owned assets looms large. This risk includes not only outright expropriation but also less drastic but still damaging actions like changing tax laws, imposing import/export restrictions, or altering labor laws that negatively impact the business. Other problems include the stability and longevity of the current government, potential changes in public sentiment towards foreign investment, and the challenge of managing a joint venture after a period of complete ownership.
