The Martians Land in New Jersey

The Martians Land in New Jersey

When the Martians first landed in New Jersey they displayed some very antisocial behaviors. They devoured large metal objects including lampposts and automobiles. They made loud, rapid, high-pitched noises. Perhaps worst of all, they harassed the cats and dogs of the local township by zapping them with energy beams. A team of psychologists from Kingsborough Community College was dispatched to the scene. The psychologists decided to begin a program of sensitivity training for the Martians. Sensitivity training is a form of education or treatment that teaches respect for the rights and feelings of others. The treatment began on December 1st and lasted to December 31st. The psychologists kept a record of the antisocial behaviors that occurred both before and after the treatment. The graphs below display the data for the three types of behaviors. The left axis in each chart shows the frequency of occurrence for each of the antisocial behaviors. The horizontal axis shows the dates on which the data were collected. The line that is labeled “Treatment” shows the data for a group of Martians that received the sensitivity training. The line that is labeled “Control” refers to a similar group of Martians that did not receive the treatment.

In an essay of 1 to 2 pages, interpret and explain the findings of the KCC psychologists. In your essay, be sure to base your conclusions on the data in the graphs. Note that at least one of the graphs seems to present less information than the others.  What information is missing in this graph?  How does this affect the conclusions you can draw? Identify the independent and dependent variables. Also answer the following: Did the sensitivity training work? Were all the behaviors affected in the same way? Did any of the behaviors fail to show an improvement? If so, how do you know? How could you explain the failure of a behavior to be helped by sensitivity training? Make sure you answer all of the above questions and give a complete and satisfying accounting for the data.
