In the immediate aftermath of the French and Indian War (The Seven Years’ War in Europe)
England decided that it would be appropriate for the colonies of British North America share
the burden of imperial defense. New taxes were voted and the colonies met these with strong
resistance. As the debate on taxation quickly became a debate about citizenship and rights, the
colonies slowly edged toward war and independence.
