The Idea of Flight in Song of Solomon
The Idea of Flight in Song of Solomon
When Guitar and Milkman discuss why the peacock does not fly, Guitar says, “Too much tail. All that jewelry weighs it down. Like vanity. Can’t nobody fly with all the shit. Wanna fly, you got to give up the shit that weighs you down” (179)
Choose one character from the novel and discuss how their vanity/pride keeps them from metaphorical flight (and all that it symbolizes) or how their lack of it allows them to “fly.”
Song of Solomon -Toni Morrison (1977)
One introduction paragraph that ends with a thesis, 2 or 3 body paragraphs, 1 conclusion paragraph. Each body paragraph needs to start with a strong, specific, and arguable topic sentence. Each body paragraph needs to analyze 2 to four quotes by discussing the significance of the quotations in light of the claim, with particular focus on the specific language and details.
Intro: Sets up background about the text and ends with a strong and arguable thesis.
Body paragraphs: each one starts with a strong and arguable topic sentence, incorporates 2-4 quotes. (I suggest you go the “important quotation” sections in the spark notes/cliff notes) Don’t forget the citation format with the page number. For the analysis of the quote, my teacher is looking for close-reading of words. What she wants to see is, set up for the quote, quote, and analysis of the words in the quote, how the quote ties to the bigger picture/thesis, and just the significance of the quote in general.
