Cecelia Painter is a 35-year-old woman with colon cancer. Chemotherapy and other cancer treatments have been unsuccessful in clearing the cancer. Recently, her physician, Dr. Susan Childs, found that the cancer had metastasized to Cecelia's liver. Dr. Childs estimates that Cecelia has 6 months to live. Cecelia is a single mother of 16 year Claudia who Cecelia thinks is sexually active and indeed she believes Claudia is pregnant.
Dr. Childs refers Cecelia and her family to hospice. Nancy Mathews is the hospice nurse who was contracted through the hospital and assigned to the family. As a student nurse you accompany Nancy to the first interview. It is apparent to both of you that Cecelia’s first concern is for Claudia. She (Cecelia) reports that Claudia won’t discuss the subject of her impending death or the possibility of being pregnant.
Task: As an “A” student in community health nursing you decide to list key points that need to
be addressed with Nancy as she develops a plan of care. In your outline:
What do you know about teen pregnancy and what special issues need to be addressed?
What members of the healthcare team need to be involved for both Cecelia and Claudia and why?
In addition what outcomes of care for Cecelia will you discuss with Nancy and why?
