The History of Film and Tourism in Jamaica

The Caribbean islands are often stereotyped in mainstream Western media as places where drug trafficking
and abuse as well as political and gang violence are the order of the day. To what extent and in what ways do
the films "The Harder They Come" and "Countryman" challenge or affirm and perpetuate these stereotypes? In
your view, what role do these stereotypes play in the development of relations between the Caribbean islands
and powerful nations such as the United States of America?
Your response should draw not only from the two films cited above but also from Emiel Martens: “The History
of Film and Tourism in Jamaica”, Pages 193-215 and Ifeona Fulani's "Representations of the Body of the New
Nation in The Harder They Come and Rockers"
