The History of Africa before 1800: Ibn Battuta
The History of Africa before 1800: Ibn Battuta
Project description
Write an an analytical essay about how Ibn Battuta's travel diary contributed significantly to the discipline of African History since large parts of African History
existed without a script for thousands of years right up to the nineteenth century. The recovery of this very rich and diverse history therefore, has necessitated the
use of a wide range of techniques including archaeology, linguistics and oral traditions to mention but a few. Ibn Battuta's travel diary is one of the many sources
that historians used to learn about the history of Africa and how people obtained their food, their socio-political history, their living spaces, commerce, art and
music as well as cross-cultural exchanges. Since this is a short essay instead of mentioning how his diary contributed to all these things it can be about one or two
like the thesis could be "Ibn Batutta's travel diary helped historians learn about politics and commerce in Africa during the XX century."
