The high cost of free and The effect of zero

1.How is the idea behind free items used to persuade consumers? How does this affect our choices when making purchases?

2.The psychological effect of seeing "zero" or the word "free" makes a world of difference in our purchases. If we did the same thing by applying this to

environmentally friendly items. Why is it that so many people stop thinking once they see the word "free?"

3.What is the basis of Sims TDR or density swapping system? How does it compare to the ideas of cap and trade, and cash incentives we discussed in week 2?

What do you think of this method of solving the issue of lack of government funds? Should these other cities be forced to take more people for the

preservation of undeveloped rural lands? Why or why not?

4.Outline some of the financial incentives that drive the King County government and also the incentives that King County offers?

5.In what ways could a free-market economic system work in conjunction with, or even supportive of, wildlife and nature conservation? Would there even be such

a thing as a natural ecosystem anymore if humans are responsible for maintaining it?

6.Is it truly more justifiable to steal non-monetary objects like the red pencil than to steal cash directly? If so, what differentiates the two?

7.As electronic payment methods become more common and the use of cash decreases, will people become more dishonest? For example, will acts of theft like the

Skype incident become more common? Why or why not?

8.What do you think causes people to be dishonest like the students in the MIT dishonesty study? Name some (keep them broad) possible justifications for

dishonesty.

9.Which results from the experiments, where honesty in test-taking is evaluated, did you find the most interesting and why? How are the results of the fourth

condition in the first experiment -where Harvard undergraduate and MBA students had a greater opportunity to cheat without being discovered- particularly

interesting?

10.Explain the difference between redistribution of income vs. wealth. What are you thoughts on universal basic income and how does it not fundamentally

change the distribution of wealth? What are some strategies, from this chapter or outside of this chapter, to redistribute wealth more equitably?
