Order Description Description and Grading Rubric This essay is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their awareness of information sciences and to consider the future of the social sciences in the 21st century. This is a three to five page essay without counting the cover sheet and any bibliography included. Students will have the opportunity to revise the essay after submitting it once for critique to the instructor. It must be written using APA style. The IDEAL essay would show the following elements. The grade for the essay will depend upon the number and quality of elements present. A) Specific Criteria 1. Uses definitions to compare social and information sciences within contemporary and historical perspectives. 2. Identifies a minimum of three video lectures or articles that address the future of social science research methods and/or topics. 3. Uses a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) to speculate about the future of a social science discipline or profession. 4. Reflects on the ways that digital media are likely to shape a social science discipline or profession. 5. Considers research ethics in digital environments; 6. Reflects on how digital media are likely to shape concepts and theories within a social science discipline. B) General Criteria 1. Can discuss the relevance of this topic to the student’s own future learning needs; 2. Show an understanding of “science literacy” and its relationship to virtual science; 3. Demonstrates senior level writing ability and use of APA style 4. Demonstrates student’s ability to think critically and identify limitations 5.
