The Epic Hero
In his article ‘The Epic Hero’, Nagy writes that the epic hero must have ‘a special kind of mentality that enables the hero to see more than one side of reality.’ In dealing with others, the epic hero often can see beyond someone’s outer appearance to perceive their inner worth. In your assigned readings for the Odyssey, describe an episode where Odysseus is able to assess that the outer appearance of someone or something is different from the inner reality.

Polyphemus is a giant, one-eyed creature who lives in a cave on a remote island. He is described as being incredibly strong and ferocious, and he is feared by all who know of him.
