In the design and operation of a comfortable, safe and productive environment it has become expedient to embrace the philosophies and technologies that were formerly classified as the domain of the IT industries but with the advent of the necessity to implement complex control strategies incorporating sophisticated energy monitoring algorithms and in some cases the reliance on ‘artificial intelligence’ and machine learning systems this is no longer the case. Historically Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) generally focused upon the localised control but this is now moving towards the holistic control of so called ‘Smart Buildings’ which encompass al aspects of a building asset and mapping this further to focus upon clusters of these ‘intelligent buildings into a larger scale energy paradigm which the nomenclature classifies as ‘Smart Cities’. The focus of this module therefore is to improve your understanding of the technologies and strategies involved in BEMs and IB design, implementation and management of BEMS and IB and how this can improve the energy efficiency of building assets from both localised and global perspectives
This assignment has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to undertake significant research in this area and the submission will take the form of a written research paper focused on the emerging technologies within the disciplines of Building energy management systems and intelligent buildings.
