Only use the article for the essay. NO OTHER SOURCES ARE ALLOWED. Answer all the questions and there does not need to be a work cited. Do not cite work unless a direct
quote is taken.
For the final, I will choose two of the following questions for you to answer. You will write 1400-1600 words on one of the two. Submit via blackboard.
Step one: Read the paper at: http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/soc/faculty/mann/Doc1.pdf
In case it helps things, I should that Mann sees power existing in four ways: military (forcing people to do things through violence); political (bringing people
together and combining their efforts); economic (controlling material “stuff”); ideological (affecting how people view the world and what they think).
Warning: do not make this paper about the difference between modern and ancient states. Leave today out of this.
1. What was the ancient state? With reference to Egypt, Israel and Greece, discuss whether there was such a thing as the state, and whether (or how) it varied across
the three.
2. In Mann’s terms, what sort of power did ancient leaders have? Discuss this in reference to Greece and at least one of Egypt and Israel.
3. Use Mann’s article to examine how Athens and Sparta became so successful. What were the strengths of each? Was the outcome of their rivalry inevitable?
