The American Nurses Association's (ANA) overall aims are to advance the nursing profession and improve healthcare for all. They appeal to each legislative session of the U.S.Congress, Democrats and Republicans alike, to address nursing legislative priorities.
Six main legislative priorities were identified by the ANA for the 117th Congress. Each priority has several items
Review each and choose two items that you believe are the most important and discuss why you chose them.
Full Answer Section
- Addressing the Social Determinants of Health: This priority includes items such as expanding access to affordable housing and food, and addressing income inequality.
- Promoting Health Equity: This priority includes items such as collecting data on disparities in health outcomes, and funding programs to address these disparities.
- Supporting the Nursing Workforce During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond: This priority includes items such as providing additional resources for nurses and hospitals, and extending pandemic-related flexibilities for nurses.
- Strengthening the Nursing Profession: This priority includes items such as supporting the development of new nursing roles, and promoting research and innovation in nursing.
I believe that the two most important legislative priorities are:
- Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers: Healthcare workers are at an increased risk of workplace violence, and it is important to take steps to protect them. OSHA should develop and enforce specific workplace safety standards for healthcare employers, and funding should be provided for training and education programs on workplace violence prevention.
- Improving Access and Care to Nurses: There is a shortage of nurses in the United States, and this shortage is only going to get worse in the coming years. It is important to take steps to increase the number of nurses and to improve access to care for patients. This includes increasing the number of nursing school faculty, providing financial assistance to nursing students, and expanding the role of advanced practice nurses.
These two priorities are important because they address the safety and well-being of nurses, as well as the access to care for patients. Nurses are essential members of the healthcare team, and it is important to invest in their profession and to protect them from harm.
