Teaching in grade levels

Here are two appropriate learning activities for 10th grade, one for each type of text, focused on specific reading skills:

Nonfiction

• Activity 1: Have students read a nonfiction article about a current event and then write a summary of the article. This activity will help students to identify the main points of the article and to summarize information in a clear and concise way.

Formal assessments that could be associated with each activity could include:

• Nonfiction: A quiz on the main points of the article or book.
• Expository: A test on the scientific concepts or social issue discussed in the text.
• Informal assessments: Teacher observations of student work, student self-assessments, and peer reviews.

I am most interested in teaching 10th grade. Here are the essential qualities for grade appropriate nonfiction and expository text for 10th grade:

• Well-organized: Nonfiction and expository text should be well-organized, with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

• Engaging: Nonfiction and expository text should be engaging and interesting to read.
