Athlete Case Study “Jackson” (/30)
Mark: 15% of course grade
Purpose:
• To calculate and evaluate the BMI of an athlete and their weight goals.
• To analyze the nutritional content of an individual athlete’s diet and to assess the impact of individual foods on the athlete’s performance.
• To apply acquired nutrient and exercise physiology knowledge to a specific athlete’s diet.
Instructions:
Use the information from the course along with your own research to answer these questions about the athlete (See below athlete profile). The amount of extra research will depend on your knowledge of sport. I suggest you review other chapters in your text and/or search online using the Langara Library to better understand the sport and the nutritional needs. As needed, cite any references using APA style (please review document on the course website if you are not familiar).

Sport: Varsity football. Running back.
Health History: No serious medical conditions
Height: 193 cm Current weight: 111.8 kg
Weight History: Jackson felt most comfortable and fit at 100.9 kg last season. In the off season he gained to his current weight due to a rigourous work schedule and less of a focus on food and training.

Training schedule:

Mondays Speed and conditioning training 1.5 hours– sprints, drills, interval training – 2-3 minutes ultra high intensity, 30 sec-1 min rest
Tuesdays Running - 1 hour
(interval training: 3 min fast, 1 min steady state)
Wednesdays Strength Training 1 hour
(at gym with a trainer)
Thursdays Speed and conditioning training – 1 hour
Fridays Rest
Saturdays Rest
Sundays Strength training – 90 minutes

Goal:
Jackson wants to get back to his ideal weight of 100.9 kg in the next 2 months, while increasing muscle and reducing body fat. His secondary goal is to improve speed, a goal identified by his coach to work on over the winter and spring.
Questions:

  1. Calculate Jackson’s BMI for his current weight and his goal weight. Discuss the weight trend. Comment on your thoughts about his weight goals. Do you think they are appropriate, healthy, realistic? Why or Why not? (5)
  2. Jackson’s Estimated Energy Requirement is 3585 cal/day . Calculate macronutrient requirements for carbohydrates, fats and protein using the Acceptable Macronutrient Range. Make sure your final answer is in grams and you show your work. (6)
    *remember the AMDR is the general recommendations for all health people, do not use the sport specific ranges here.
  3. Jackson has been reporting fatigue and low energy part way through his conditioning workouts. During your assessment, you note that Jackson reports dark yellow urine throughout the day and suspect he isn’t well hydrated.

a. What is his base daily fluid requirement (AI from beverages) in milliliters (mL) according to the Dietary Reference Intake values? (1)
b. Looking at the food diary below, calculate how much more fluid he needs to meet this basic requirement in milliliters (mL). (1)

  1. Jackson has also been hitting the wall during his longer runs, at about the 45 minute mark. Last week he noted he felt lightheaded and shaky.
