Special Education in Saudi Arabia: Past, Present, and Future
The topic of education is as important in Saudi Arabia as anywhere else in the world. The information in this paper provides an in-depth explanation of the
education system in Saudi Arabia and special education services and programs for students with disabilities. This paper explores the interconnecting
components of inclusive education, including educators, parents, policymakers, and other professionals within a historical context of the past, present and
future of special education in Saudi Arabia. Through which, we plan to improve special education services within Saudi Arabia. Additionally, this paper
presents the findings of some studies that examined the special education services of students with disabilities. The focus of this paper is on providing
renewed approaches toward inclusive education and support for both the students and professionals involved in the special education field in Saudi Arabia.
In comparison with countries who have more progressive and developed special education services and support, the special education legislation stands out
as an essential part of the development of special education apparatus. Historically speaking, among the leaders in education in the world, Saudi Arabia in
relatively new in its implementation and development of a successful special education program, which is able to affect those students in need of special
education services. Much of this is due to historical and cultural aspects, which act as barriers, and which are identified to overcome those issues and
springboard Saudi Arabia into a leading position among those innovating new and helpful ways to protect and assist students with disabilities.
