Social Analysis

In the novel American Street, the narrator reflects on the urban space of Detroit where she has found herself
living in the U.S. She states, “Joy Road meets American Street…Joy and American. A Crossroads.
Intersecting. One is not the other…There are not that many houses and lots of open land. It can either mean
endless possibilities or dark, empty hope.” (Zoboi, 111) Would you argue that the portrayal of the lives of
Fabiola and her Haitian-origin family members in Detroit represents life in the U.S. as filled with endless
possibilities, or dark, empty hope?
