Describe the Rhetorical Choices
Using the questions suggested by Melanie Gagich to conduct rhetorical analysis of the episode "Phyllis & Fred & Brenda & Marc" from the Hulu series Mrs. America.
• The Message: What is the author (or perhaps the directors/ producers) trying to accomplish? • The Audience: Who is the intended audience? Who is their (potential) unintended audience? • The Author: What do you think is the author's relationship to the message? What is their relationship to their audience? (In other words. why does this matter - and what potential biases might these authors have?) • The Genre: Describe the genre of the text. What conventions do the authors adhere to? What conventions do they subvert or avoid?
Analyze the Rhetorical Choices through the Lens of Pomerleau's "Consorting with the Enemy"
Analyze the rhetorical choices made in the episode "Phyllis & Fred & Brenda & Marc" from the Hulu series Mrs. America by engaging with a specific idea expressed in Clark A Pomerleau's "Consorting with the Enemy." My suggestion is to engage closely with Pomerleau's text by identifying one or two quotations that you find relevant to Mrs. America. Then work to do the same by analyzing a particular scene - or two - from the episode. Ultimately you will want to reflect on the ways the episode engages with Pomerleau's ideas.
