Researching Deforestation

In this exercise, you will conduct research on deforestation in a country. You will determine the amount, reasons, methods, and implications of deforestation occurring in the country. You will also create a flowchart depicting the causes and effects of deforestation.

PROCEDURE
Choose one of the following countries to conduct research for deforestation:
Brazil
Columbia
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Indonesia
Madagascar
Malaysia
Thailand
Use the Internet to research the following information:
Record the name of the country in Data Table 1.
Determine the approximate amount of deforestation that has occurred in the country in the last 50 years and record in Data Table 1.
List the reasons for deforestation in Data Table 1 (i.e. urbanization, plantations, logging, etc.).
List the methods of deforestation in Data Table 1.
Record the known implications of deforestation in Data Table 1 (i.e. effect on the economy, human population, and/or wildlife and plant life).
Record the sources used for your research in Panel 1.
Create a flowchart depicting the causes and effects of deforestation from the country researched in step 2 using the following as a guide. See Figure 5 for an example.
Record one reason that causes deforestation.
Record at least 3 primary implications of deforestation.
Record at least 1 primary negative outcome for each implication listed in step 4b.
Record at least 1 secondary outcome for each primary outcome listed in step 4c.
