Public Health
Public health initiatives have traditionally fallen under the powers of the state executive branch, including state governors. But the many conflicts of the pandemic sparked critical debates about the appropriate role of state governments in affecting public health. More than 26 states have instituted legislation that limits the governor’s powers to issue public health-related mandates. Some states have taken powers away from state health officials, which also fall under the executive branch (bureaucracy), to close schools or require masks. Using Chapter 7 as a resource, write a 2-3 page paper explaining what role you believe that governors and state executive agencies should play in matters involving public health. What is the proper use of the governor’s powers in this area? Also, examine whether or not state legislatures should have the ability to limit executive branch powers in these areas.
