“positive” aspects of obesity

Both authors discussed the “positive” aspects of obesity, that is, how some (affluent) individuals such as doctors and dieticians benefit from the economy that has been created around fear of obesity. And that is on top of the fast-food and agricultural sectors which have led many in America to consume more, unhealthier food. In this light, obesity fits with the “chicken in every pot” pretensions of capitalism, as Albritton says. Julier also points out how obesity has been weaponized as a symptom of some moral or patriotic failing, exemplified by Health and Human Services director Tommy Thompson’s (p.556) call for patriotic Americans to lose 10 pounds. So is obesity a hallmark of capitalist America, or is it un-American? The coexistence of these two narratives about obesity make sense when we consider who obesity is often weaponized against in the United States: the poor, women, and racial and ethnic minorities, all groups of people who have been historically excluded from self-representation.
