Plato’s Crito and King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”

Imagine you have a friend, Gabriela, whose parents immigrated to the US and became citizens. Gabriela was born here in New York City and grew up in Brooklyn. She has begun to be politically active in the last couple of years. Last year, sheworked “within the system” in various ways, including volunteering for an electoralcampaign and being a poll worker in the last election. Gabriela has just sent you an e-mail asking for some advice. She knows you are taking a class about politics and she is facing a difficult decision, so she thinks you might be able to help her. She has to choose between participating in some political activity that involves breaking the law or continuing to work “within the system” to try to achieve her goals. She has not told you what specific activity she is thinking about or what the cause is, but she has said that the activity will involve breaking the law and the cause is one she strongly believes in.Drawing on Plato’s Crito and King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”, write a response to Gabriela in which you use the arguments of these two works to help her think about her choice more clearly.
