Plato Symposium

1) Identify and state a principle of desire that Plato, Epicurus, and Epictetus share.

2) Referring to and paraphrasing texts, present the core argument each gives that this principle is true. (Do not quote unless the author's word use is crucial.)

3) In what ways are their arguments compatible, and what assumptions do they make that conflict with each other?

4) Evaluate to what extent they are in fact arguing for the same principle.

5) What are the consequences of thinking as they did? What are the consequences of not thinking this? Today, do we (i.e. today’s most astute common opinion) think it is true? Why or why not? Could we still?
