Photography in the Civil War
Photography in the Civil War
Photographic images have largely shaped the ways in which non-combatants view, understand and form opinions about warfare in the modern age. The U.S. Civil War was the first American war where photographs were taken and distributed widely, and the public was able to see images taken directly from the battlefield.
For your final journal entry, I would like you to choose a Civil War photograph from the following database via the Library of Congress: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/cwp/index/subjects/a/
Images are grouped by subject headings, which are listed alphabetically. Click the letters at the top of the page to jump to another group of subjects.
In your entry of 250-350 words, include the following:
1. A link to your image (just copy and paste from the address bar).
2. Explain why you chose this photograph in particular. What struck you visually about the image?
3. How do you think people during the time period would have reacted to the photograph?
4. In looking at the photograph, what can you learn about the nature of the Civil War?
