Phonology palatalization and stopping.

  1. Read the following case and determine if the course of action was correct or not. Then explain your rational for your determination. (250 points)
A 4 year old child was assessed for a severe phonological disorder. They were given the CAAP and CTOPP (tests phonemic awareness skills) as well as a language sample. Below are the results of testing: CAAP: Active processes: gliding, deaffrication, depalatalization and stopping. CTOPP: areas of weakness: segmenting, blending, recognizing/producing words with same beginning sound, clapping/counting syllables in words. Language sample: highly unintelligible second to phonological errors, need context to know meaning. Using 2-4 word utterances (assumed based on pattern of speech). Rate, prosody and intonation were considered WFL. Pragmatics and play skills were also assessed to be WFL The speech therapist checks for stimulability and finds the child is very stimulable to clinician modeling.
They make the recommendation to not pick the child up for therapy services, citing the fact the child is exhibiting phonological error patterns which are developmental. The therapist discharges the child.
  2. Relate what you learned this semester regarding diagnostic and therapy to the type of work/setting you think (at this point) you want to work (e.g. Audiology/Speech, school, hospital, private clinic). How will you apply what you have learned in that setting? What methods of diagnostics do you think you will employ? Why? What methods of treatment do you think you will employ? Why? (150 points)
  3. What is the biggest takeaway you learned this semester? Why? How will what you learned impact your abilities as an Audiologist/Speech Pathologist going forward? (100 points)
