Philosophy; Materialism vs Dualism

The two main positions on the mind-body problem are dualism and materialism. Although there are various nuances, dualism roughly says that we are some kind of non-material thing that is not identical to a physical body. Sometimes, this is referred to as a “soul.” By contrast, materialism says that we are just physical entities – whether that be a body, a brain, or a brain-state.

There are good reasons both for and against each position. Philosophers working on the mind-body problem have drawn battle lines around these two positions. For this week’s assignment, you will join the battle and assess the arguments for each position.

Write an essay in which you defend either materialism or dualism. Your essay should be divided into two parts. First, you will explain why you think materialism or dualism makes sense. Second, you will explain why the other position does not make sense, or at least is less reasonable compared to the other.

Please make sure to reference the lesson concepts when writing your essay. You should be making philosophical arguments that make use of what we have been talking about. Make your case using arguments and evidence that are accessible to everyone. You should not assume that your audience shares the same personal experiences or religious convictions that you have.

Your paper should be 2-3 pages in length and follow APA formatting guidelines. Make sure you use 12-point Times New Roman font and double-spacing.
