Wall-E may be the most dystopian “kids” movie ever made. Using a thin veil of Pixar slapstick cuteness, director Andrew Stanton (of A Bug’s Life and Finding Nemo) is able to tackle extremely dark subject matter
involving the future of humanity, life on Earth, and capitalism. As is intended, whenever I watch the film, I find myself giggling through the horror of the world the director has created. With this in mind, discuss any of the following topics.
-Discuss humanity’s ignorance in the film; there are many layers to this
-What connections can you make between Odds Against Tomorrow and Wall-E? What do both films say about
the future of capitalism?
-Discuss Buy N Large corporation and the monopoly it has on human existence in the film
-Discuss the importance of questioning the status quo and/or individuality in the film, perhaps linking this to a
sense of irony that the hero of individuality of the film is a robot
-What does the film say about life on Earth?
