There are a few different reasons counselors may pursue licensure. One reason is the ability to work in any counseling setting, including inpatient, outpatient, residential treatment, individual and group settings, and private practice. Oftentimes, employers require licensure to practice, or may not allow the employee to work a full range of settings within their practice. For example, in a hypothetical work environment, without a license I may be allowed to run group counseling but may not be given the chance to offer individual sessions. In addition, a full license may show clients that I am knowledgeable in my field and have the training necessary to offer them the care they need and deserve. Finally, a license may also help find better malpractice insurance and oftentimes comes with a higher salary.
