Getting Started
A case study is a description of an actual business scenario. To help you get accustomed to the structure of the case study method we will be conducting a series of mini-case studies for the purpose of preparing you to conduct the final case study project. You are to read each mini-case study and answer the discussion questions associated with it.
It is not just corporations that must develop a strategy to promote and increase their brands. In some cases, athletes or celebrities are brands in themselves. This case study demonstrates that many of the same principles used by corporations to create competitive advantage can be utilized by individuals.
Upon successful completion of the course material, you will be able to:

Background Information
Michael Phelps is a unique individual who stands 6’4” on size 14 flipper-like feet combined with a “wingspan” of outstretched arms reaching 6’ 7”. Dedication to intensive training along with this unusual physique made him an Olympic champion swimmer. His 18 gold medals in swimming more than double the medals of his nearest contender. In addition to his natural endowments and training, he also strategically planned to convert his Olympic gold into commercial profit. This case study examines how Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps turned into a global brand.

- Read Mini-Case #1 entitled, “Michael Phelps: The Role of Strategy in Olympics and Business” beginning on p. 448.
- Answer the case discussion questions 1-4 (not #5) on p. 449. Defend your answers with comprehensive evaluations that demonstrate clear, insightful critical thinking .
- Your answer to each question should provide a detailed explanation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking. Be sure to use correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, varied diction and word choices, grammar, and APA format. The overall analysis should be 500–600 words in length. Do not repeat the questions in your paper. Write in such a manner that you address the questions without the need to repeat the questions. Use concepts and terminology from your reading.
