.Formally analyze one of the works of art in a complete essay.
.First paragraph of the essay include a thesis, or introductory, sentence about the image that states the artwork’s artist, title, date, and medium (all in one, long sentence) as well as an introduction to what your analysis will say about the work. Then describe, objectively and factually, what the image depicts or shows. This is simple non-evaluative description.
.After your introductory paragraph, move into the body of the paper and conduct a thorough formal analysis of your chosen image, Make sure you take the time to analyze ALL of the visual elements and how the artist used or put them together to make the work.
.In the second to last paragraph, bring your knowledge of the work from your description of what is depicted, your analysis of how the formal aspects contribute to the understanding of the subjects/objects depicted, your knowledge of the history of art to date, and your own observations and perceptions of the forms’ connotations and the image’s mood to argue an INTERPRETATION of the overall content or meaning. DO NOT use the first person.
.In final paragraph conclude your interpretation and analysis, by connecting your conclusion to your thesis and introductory paragraph. This helps you ensure that you covered everything you set out to cover in your introduction.
