“oh, that’s ancient history!”
We have all heard someone dismiss something by claiming, “oh, that’s ancient history!” This figure of speech refers to a story that has been repeated or happened so long ago that it does not matter in the present. It has become part of our vernacular and we accept this use of slang without condemning the speaker for ignorance.
Now that you are a student of ancient history, how might you challenge the use of that phrase by suggesting an important contribution, development, or institution from ancient times that still impacts our lives today? Why do you think that example is so significant and how has it changed the course of history, including, perhaps, your personal life?
Be sure to focus on the topics we have covered so far in the first three chapters (do not jump ahead to future readings) and make an original contribution here. If someone already posted about your idea, try to think of a different example, as there are many, or join in the conversation by adding new details or analysis.
